MUSIC

Mark McNeil with Tales from Hamilton
Friday December 1, 2017, 8 pm, tip jar.
Celebrated singer-songwriter and longtime Spectator reporter Mark McNeil will give you the inside scoop about the city we love. After 35 years of chronicling Hamilton, Mark knows where the bodies are buried and how to write a great song about them. Come hear about Jacko the Killer Monkey, Evelyn Dick, Rocco Perri, Einstein’s Brain, and many other twisted tales from the “biggest small town on the planet.” Joining him will be harmonica virtuoso Les Smith and tuba wizard Jay Burr. Les, who is also an incredible songwriter and heads the Hamilton Regional Songwriters Group, will do an opening set.

Bluegrass with New Cumberland
Saturday December 2, 2017 at 8pm $15
The New Cumberland bluegrass band from London Ontario: Tom Burns vocals and guitar,  Blair Heddle vocals, mandolin and dobro, Paul Hurdle vocals and banjo, Tom Rutledgestring bass, and Darrin Schott fiddle. Featuring inventive solo work, driving rhythms and three part vocal harmonies, New Cumberland’s musical integrity and joy in playing together resonates in every performance.

THEATRE

Charly's Piano
December 7 to 16, 2017. Artword Theatre’s seasonal offering is Charly’s Piano, a new play by Charly Chiarelli, directed by Ronald Weihs, produced by Judith Sandiford. It runs Tues to Sat at 8 pm, Sun Dec 10 matinee at 3 pm (no show Monday). Tickets $20 (905-543-8512).

Charly’s Piano is the true story about how Charly went to work as a psychiatric assistant at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto. The year was 1972, Toronto was full of music and hippies, and the Clarke was exploring new techniques in mental health. Charly, harmonica and all, fit right in. Pretty soon, he’s organizing a fundraiser to buy a piano for the patients to play. At first, no one signs up, but when the “Cat Lady” says she’ll sing Me and Bobby McGee, the idea takes off. Patients, doctors, nurses perform in a sell-out concert. But the story isn’t over. Charly and a patient known as “The Duchess” travel by public transit to a mansion on the outskirts of Toronto and buy the piano. And at Christmas, the piano is in the lounge, where Charly leads patients and staff (and audience) in Christmas songs and carols.
