A friendly cafe-bar, live music and art venue in the heart of James North arts district. Great acoustic music, in the roots, folk, jazz, world beat and inventive mode. We have a baby grand piano, a sound system. Licensed under the AGCO for 60, cafe tables and bar stools, micro-brew on tap, espresso, light meals [all-ages venue]. Artword Theatre: Dance Showcase
Wednesday to Friday, June 21 to 23, 2017, at 8 pm, $10.
Artword Theatre presents a Contemporary Dance Showcase, curated by dancer-choreographer Learie Mc Nicolls. The program will be repeated for three evenings, with special guests. Featured is a new work, Duets for a Partner, choreographed and danced by Learie Mc Nicolls with Tanis Macarthur. This work features a visual design by Judith Sandiford, with real-time projections (photo left)



Beats Workin’ duo David Hurley & Charly Chiarelli
Thursday June 1, 2017, 8 pm. $10.
Beats Workin’ is a duo from Kingston: David Hurley on seven-string guitar and vocals and Charly Chiarelli on harmonica and vocals. They perform a variety of music from jazz, blues, rock and original. You can expect a little delicious storytelling as a side dish.

tiny bill cody sees the devil

The ever-unpredictably wonderful Tiny Bill Cody is back with a solo show:  “tiny bill cody sees the devil“, in which tiny bill cody recounts his incredible true story of seeing the devil, thinking about it too much, and then writing lots of songs.

Ted’s Warren Commission plays fresh, original, modern jazz. Ted Warren’s compositions draw on the history of the music while pointing to the future of it. In short, Ted’s Warren Commission is the sonic equivalent of eating cookies! Ted’s Warren Commission is: Ted Warren drums, Kim Ratcliffe guitar, Mike Malone trumpet, Mike Downes bass.

One-Night-Only-Reunion Show: Jason Jones Unit, jazz-bluegrass
Wed June 7, 2017, at 8 pm, $10 / $5 students. The Jason Jones Unit returns to Artword Artbar for a One Night Only Reunion Show. Jason Jones guitar, Jill McKenna bass and Scott Taplay guitar, plus a guest fiddle player. Bringing bluegrass and jazz influences together, this quartet plays compositions of Tony Rice, Bill Monroe and Dave Grisman to name a few!

Bolivian charango player Willy Rios
Thursday June 8, 2017, at 8 pm, $15.
Willy Rios, master charango player from Bolivia, is visiting Artword Artbar. He will be performing with Hugo Larenas (flamenco and classical guitarist) and Daniel Emden (percussionist). The charango is the Andean traditional stringed instrument in the lute family. www.willyrios.com

Cootes Paradise

The powerhouse band of familiar faces returns to Artword Artbar: Cootes Paradise, a collective of six musicians who chose to play together, combining their many talents. Their music is roots-based: bluesy, funky, and filled with soul. Band members are: Amy Di Nino (drums), Wayne Krawchuk (guitar/vocals), Sue Leonard (vocals), Lily Sazz (keyboards/vocals), Ian Taylor (bass), Mark Volkov (flute, violin, sax).

José Contreras + Paul Linklater

José Contreras of By Divine Right and Paul Linklater of the Pinecones bring their respective solo acts to Artword Artbar. These veteran performers thrive on thwarting the sonic convention of the strumming troubadour!

Andrew Aldridge – Planet of the Loops

Noted guitarist Andrew Aldridge is bringing back his legendary Planet of the Loops  live at Artword Artbar with special guests: Tim Tickner, Wally Jericho, Steve Wood. Andrew Aldridge. Join us for a night of live improvised recycling of sounds! Anything can happen, and frequently does!

The Kirkendolls
Friday June 16, 2017, at 8 pm, $10/ pwyc.
A return visit by The Kirkendolls, a new local band: Mark Caruana on vocals and guitar, Tom Shea on bass, Jamie Shea on guitar, and Mario Laquintana on drums. The music is a mix of music from originals to jazzy re-arrangements to soulful blues and beyond.

Thom Coombes and Max Marshall
Saturday June 17, 2017, at 8 pm, $10.
Two folk-based singer-songwriters on tour with new material for spring 2017 are making a stop at Artword Artbar. Thom Coombes from Newfoundland and Max Marshall from Harrow, Ontario, have embarked on an 18-date eastern and central Canadian tour. 

Thursday June 29, 2017, 8 pm, $10 reg / $5 students.
Back for more of “It Is What It Is” — fusion psychedelic jazz featuring the far-out fabulous Doug Murphy on guitar, with Alana Gunn bass, Oscar Galbraith drums, Mike Ricci sax and flute. All original compositions, mostly by Doug himself. 

Friday, June 30, 2017, at 8 pm, $10.
Richard Garvey, our favourite wandering minstrel is on the road again. He’s back at Artword, this time with two guests: singer-songwriters Teal Booth and Charlie Banjo Bean. A great start to your Canada Day weekend in town!
