A friendly cafe-bar, live music and art venue in the heart of James North arts district. Great acoustic music, in the roots, folk, jazz, world beat and inventive mode. We have a baby grand piano, a sound system. Licensed under the AGCO for 60, cafe tables and bar stools, micro-brew on tap, espresso, light meals [all-ages venue]. Art installations on the lower level.

Stuart Laughton’s RADIO DIAL band performs for the first time as an acoustic trio. Stuart Laughton (vocals + many instruments), Rebecca Campbell (vocals) and Martin Worthy (guitar, drums, vocals) bring you an evening of beautiful vocal and instrumental harmonies.

The powerhouse band of familiar faces returns to Artword Artbar: Cootes Paradise, a collective of six musicians who chose to play together, combining their many talents. Their music is roots-based: bluesy, funky, and filled with soul.

String Bone (Barry James Payne), new album Love & Highways

Early show with Barry James Payne and his String Bone band. String Bone is Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart and soul. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne, the architect of String Bone, has a new collection of songs and stories, Love & Highways, his second full-length recording.

Latin Music peña with Marcelo Puente

Artword Artbar becomes a peña folklórica (a folk-music club) for an evening of Latin music, featuring Chilean musician and activist Marcelo Puente with guests. Join us for acoustic Latin music, Latin folk and South American New Song (Nueva Cancion). Other performers includes Nancy Reyes and Constanza Duran.

Back at Artword Artbar! Jennis, the delightful folk-blues duo.  Jennis brings together Guelph-based Dennis Gaumond’s original blues and folk with the diverse musical experiences of Toronto multi-instrumentalist Jen Gillmor.

MOJO is the Men of Jazz Octet, a group of the area’s top jazz players.  The line up for the night: Don Templeton trombone, Jeff Plumbley trumpet, Lindsay Paul tenor sax, Darren Blundel alto sax, Dave Rubicini bari sax (group photo left), plus Marc Girard guitar, Joel Banks bass, and Ken Bower drums.

The Secrets of the Gypsy Guitar
Tuesday November 21, 2017, at 7:30 pm. $20 / $15 for students, seniors.
The Secrets of the Gypsy Guitar, a performance by leg Timofeyev and Vadim Kolpakov. Oleg Timofeyev is a pioneer in the revival of the Russian seven-string guitar. Vadim Kolpakov is the celebrated Russian-Roma (Gypsy) virtuoso, who grew up in Russian Roma musical tradition. The two musicians have been exploring an intricate mix of the written legacy of Russian guitar composers with the exciting living tradition of the Russian Roma (Gypsy).

Timna & Dario Duo (Brazil/Argentina)
Wednesday November 22, 2017, 8 pm, $tba. Timna & Dario Duo (Timna Comedi and Darío Acosta Teich).  A beautiful Brazilian voice and  Argentinian guitar come together in exquisite arrangements that combine tropical rhythms with jazzy harmonies and a touch of contemporary music. 

Singer-songwriter Pip, with Brad Cheeseman & Jadon Haughton
Thursday November 23, 2017 at 8 pm, $tba. Singer-songwriter Pip writes distinctive and melodic art-pop songs with jazz and world elements. He will be joined by Brad Cheeseman (bass) and Jadon Haughton (drums).  Together they will fashion interpretations of new songs from the 2017 album Twenty-Four Obscurity Mills and other songs composed by Pip.

The Amy Project, stories/songs of Amy Winehouse

The Amy Project is a musical and storied journey outlining the short but tragic life of Amy Winehouse, the late British soul, blues and jazz singer. The show is performed live, raw and acoustically by five talented performers: Marni Shuster as the voice of Amy,  Anthony Caradonna guitar/vocals, Ian Taylor bass/vocals, Amy DiNino piano/synth/vocals and Dominic DiNino drums. 

Waleed Kush African Jazz Ensemble
Saturday November 25, 2017 at 8 pm, $tba.
The Waleed Kush African Jazz Ensemble returns! This ensemble combines the ancient rhythms of Africa with the jazz harmonies of modern times. Waleed Abdulhamid (Composer/Band Leader) explains:  “We play melody on top of traditional jazzy chord progressions with a twist of African ancient rhythms. There is a place for African instruments such as gombri, lakoumbe, marimba in the music.”
