Featuring the work of Eric Euler
“The Shadow’s Reminder” is a collection of ten original prints produced over the spring of 2017 at Nipissing University. This series of work is the product of searching for solace. I have so much to be happy and thankful for, yet occasionally still get plagued by the weight of despair. This exhibition is about understanding, facing, and owning these types of emotions.
Using a monochromatic visual language rooted in the interpretation of the Jungian shadow archetype and the Northern Ontario landscape, I excavate glimpses of fear, ambivalence, and ultimately of transformation. My dark collection of prints doesn’t illustrate a specific narrative, rather, it shares dramatic glimpses into a quest of uncertainty. Traces of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth contextualize the climactic scenes, offering insight into the mythic fight for agency and growth. While my personal and emotive experiences adorn this body of work, my intention is to share their universality. I invite the viewers to project their accumulative selves into the pieces, to reflect on their own challenges, and to hopefully channel a strength that anchors their fight for a more meaningful and fulfilling existence.
