Sketching Hamilton by John Hanson [Earls Court Gallery]

Sketching Hamilton
Original Drawings by John Hanson (1920 – 2011)

March 1 - April 30, 2017

John Hanson was born in 1920, Hamilton, where he grew up in the East end on Balmoral Avenue, North. As a young student passionate for art, Hanson attended Memorial (City) School. Hanson began to explore his passion for the arts, which was against his father’s wishes. Thankfully, John Hanson kept true to his passion, because we are now able to see the historical evolution of Hamilton from an artist’s eye.

Sketching Hamilton features drawings based on the rebirth of Hamilton in the 1960s and 1970s. Since their conception, these drawings have been hidden away patiently waiting for the perfect time to resurface. Revealing the sketches now, during today’s revitalization of the Steel Town to Arts Town, seems to offer them greater respect than the time period in which they were created.

Hanson composed all the drawings on site amongst the noise of demolition, the peace of the boat yards, and the horns of the Hamilton Bay’s docks. Earls Court Gallery Online Store is proud to share these sketches as a documentation of Hamilton, as well as release them for sale so that they may become a shared history of where Hamilton has been.
