Volunteering and the Factor of Three

By Olivia Vanderwal

[Olivia Vanderwal is an English Literature graduate and short fiction writer living in Hamilton. She is an aspiring novelist, world traveler, and professional student. You can find her at booksandwordsandthings.blogspot.ca and @vanderwalrus on Twitter]

I’ve been a volunteer with the Hamilton Arts Council for the past seven months. In that time, I’ve helped with setup and promotion during Supercrawl, organized and participated in the Hamilton Literary Awards, written countless media updates and calls for entry, sent out dozens of emails to local artists and organizations, and, most recently, become a member of the Hamilton Literary Committee. I say this not to showcase all the work we do here, but to share the many opportunities I have had to network and grow within my city.

Volunteering is such an integral part of the non-profit sector, and whether you’re an individual or a larger organization, there are certainly many factors to seek out when considering or evaluating a role. There are, I think, three components required for a successful and meaningful volunteer...

The Hamilton Arts Council invites you to participate in the 2nd annual Hamilton Arts Week from June 5-11, 2016. An annual celebration of the arts in Hamilton, Hamilton Arts Week is a civic movement to encourage widespread cultural engagement in our city among all Hamiltonians.

We launched Hamilton Arts Week last year through an awareness campaign that saw us promoting over 50 arts and cultural events from June 1-7, 2015. This year, we look forward to growing that number while introducing new Hamilton Arts Week programming that encourages widespread engagement in the arts across all parts of our city. This is your opportunity to reach new audiences and encourage Hamiltonians to engage authentically with the arts in their city and we want to help you!

To find out how you can get involved follow the LINK to our website for more info!

Echo Artist Talks is a project of the Hamilton Arts Council Visual Arts Committee that provides a forum for both local and visiting artists exhibiting in Hamilton galleries to share their experiences with the local arts community. Hosted monthly at Mills Hardware in downtown Hamilton, each talk will include a Q&A session and opportunity for informal networking before and after the talk - grab a drink at the cash bar and join us in getting to know some of the artists behind this year's upcoming exhibitions! Doors open at 7:00 in advance of the start of the artist's talk at 7:30.

On Thursday April 28, we welcome painter Daniel Hutchinson as our third Echo Artist Talks speaker. Daniel recently co-curated Staging Abstraction: Paintings from the Collection which is on view at the Art Gallery of Hamilton from April 16, 2016 to March 2017.
